What a weekend to release rankings.

Number one Alabama falls to South Carolina, LSU hands the Gators their second consecutive loss in what can only be described as Milesian fashion, Michigan State’s defense contains Denard Robinson en route to thumping rival Michigan, Oregon State upsets Arizona on the road, and Stanford finishes off the Trojans on their final drive to give them their second loss in as many weeks.

There was plenty of shakeup in the polls, as the conference play and top 25 matchups started to uncover which teams are real, and which have been the beneficiaries of weaker opponents. We’re sure to find out much more in the coming weeks as well.

Below is the season’s first edition of the Elite Selection Playoff (ESP) and AV Ranking (AVR). Oregon sits atop the ESP while Oklahoma edged out Auburn for the number one stop in the AVR. Six of the top 10 AVR teams have strength of schedule (SOS) rankings in the bottom half of the FBS, so there could certainly be more shakeup on the horizon.

The Irish come in at 56th in the AVR with the 4th most difficult SOS. Notre Dame also ranks 10th in quality wins/losses (QWL) but in the bottom half of FBS in adjusted win percentage (AWP) and margin of victory (MOV). The Irish currently stand at number 60 in the team performance ratio (TPR)—73rd on offense, 37th on defense.
