2010 Elite Selection Playoff: Week Nine

And then there were five.

Iowa dismantled Michigan State and Nebraska handled Missouri to reduce the number of unbeaten teams from seven to five. Auburn, Boise State, Oregon, TCU, and Utah are the only remaining unbeaten teams and all occupy the top five spots of the ESP. The same is true for the AVR with on exception—Utah’s 118th ranked strength of schedule (SOS) has them in the 9th spot.

Weak schedules are a trend for teams atop the rankings. Auburn has played a noteworthy slate of opponents, but Boise State (92nd ranked SOS), Oregon (108), TCU (99), Nebraska (65), and Ohio State (71) all join Utah as top 10 AVR teams with schedule strengths in the bottom half of the FBS.

After the loss to Tulsa the Irish fall to 65th in the AVR. Notre Dame has played the 13th toughest schedule, ranks 26 in quality wins/losses (QWL), 77th in adjusted win percentage (AWP), 72nd in margin of victory (MOV), and 59th in team performance ratio (TPR). Breaking the TPR into offense and defense, the Irish rank 70th in offensive TPR and 41st in defensive TPR.

Future Irish opponent AVR ranks: Utah—9th, Army—50th, USC—32nd.
